A. CAR RACE
C. FAVOURITE TOY
E. HELPFUL MACHINE G. UNUSUAL CAR
B. REAL PLEASURE D. SERIOUS PROBLEMS
F. DIFFERENT TOYS
1. Things boys play with are not like objects girls play with. Boys often have more freedom
to run about and they get guns, train sets, toy trucks and toy cars. Electronic games are
very popular among young boys. Toys for girls are much quieter and more passive. Young
girls often get things like dolls, dresses, and pictures to colour.
2. “Teddies” are an important part of British culture. Most people in Britain have a teddy
bear when they are young, and most people are very fond of their special bear, even when
they are 30 or 40 years old! Many famous people like film stars or pop stars or politicians
collect “teddies”. These people have donated their old friends to the teddy bear museum
which is in Stratford-on-Avon in England. Many tourists go to this place, because it is the
birthplace of Shakespeare, but they often love the teddy bear museum more.
3. Computer games are a multimillion dollar industry, but people who really enjoy games
are not satisfied with playing against the computer. They want to play against real people
and most computer games allow you to do that just by joining up with other players on the
Internet. Regular players say that this is where their true enjoyment of games can be
found. With some games up to 60 people can take part. It's a good way to meet people and
it gives you something to talk about.
4. The big American company General Motors has developed a vehicle that uses the
power of the sun instead of petrol. The vehicle is called Sunraycer which means "ray of the
sun+raуcer. Sunraycer has just taken part in a race against 25 solar-powered vehicles.
Sunraycer covered the great distance in 45 hours at a speed of 41 miles an hour at
temperatures as high as 48°C. It is certainly the car of the future.
5. Computers are a great technological invention of the 20th century. Their advantages are
numerous yet much can be said against them. The main disadvantage of computers is that
looking at a screen for long periods of time is bad for the eyes, and sitting on a chair for
hours is not healthy. Also, people who use computers have a tendency to become antisocial and stay at home. The strongest argument against the use of computers is that the
more jobs which are done by computers, the less are done by people.
6. Thirty years ago few people realized that computers were about to become part of our
everyday lives. This short period of time has seen great changes in business, education
and public administration. Jobs which took weeks to do in past, are now carried out in
minutes. Schoolchildren have become as familiar with hardware and software as their
parents were with pencils and exercise books and they don’t worry about mistakes having
a computer.

The monster fish announced itself with four huge blows of its tail, thrashing against the
net that had trapped it in the Mekong River.
It was a rare giant catfish, 1 _____________ .
At 2.7 meters in length and weighing 293 kilogram, it may be the biggest freshwater fish
ever recorded.
But in one of the world's more surprising mysteries, nobody really knows which is the
biggest species of fish lurking under the waters of the Mekong or the Amazon or the
Yangtze or the Congo or the Colorado or Lake Baikal.
When the giant catfish was caught in May, a biologist named Zeb S. Hogan
rushed here to take a look. It was his first trophy 2 ___________ .
Sponsored by the National Geographic Society and the World Wildlife Fund,
3 _____________ .
He has started with the Mekong, which he said has seven species of giant fish,
more than any other river, along with at least 750 other species. All of them are
threatened
4 _______________ - by overfishing, pollution and development, including
major dam projects.
The Mekong giant catfish may be 5 _____________ . The few that remain
can be spotted now only in central Cambodia and here, just below the Golden
Triangle, where northern Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet.
No one has made a credible claim to top this year's trophy, Mr. Hogan said. "I
keep expecting people to send me photos or records of larger fish,
6. ______________ ," Mr. Hogan said. "But that's kind of the point of the project. Let's
gather all the information that's out there and decide which is the largest freshwater fish."
A. like river fish around the world
B. in a project to identify the world's largest freshwater fish in the hope of slowing
their extinction
C. but nobody has
D. and it took five boatmen an hour to pull it in and 10 men to lift it when they
reached the shore in this remote village in northern Thailand
E. but we couldn't weigh it
F. Mr. Hogan has embarked on an 18-month expedition that will take him to five
continents

цифру 1, 2, 3 или 4, соответствующую выбранному вами варианту ответа.
Ask a hundred comedians what the secret of good comedy is, and you're
guaranteed that at least ninety-nine of them will come up with the same response:
timing. Although this is undoubtedly true, it is not the complete answer, as what exactly
good comedy is should, surely, involve the concept of making people laugh. Successful
politicians also have to have good timing, but most of them would soon face an empty
audience if they ever chose to perform at a comedy club.
So what is the secret of good comedy? There clearly isn't one straight answer, but
there's no doubt that much of modern British humour relies on comedy through
language, comedians like Charlie Chaplin and Benny Hill and present-day characters
like Mr Bean being part of a different tradition of 'slapstick' comedy that relies on the
physical rather than the verbal.
The joke is the most obvious example of “language comedy”. With language
comedy, how you phrase what you're saying - particularly the 'punchline', the final line
of a joke that draws the laugh - is more important than what you're saying. Take this
traditional double-act joke:
First man: I say, I say, I say. My wife's gone to the Caribbean.
Second man: Jamaica?
First man: No, she went of her own accord.
Ignoring the fact that it's not particularly funny to modern ears (if it ever was funny),
at first sight it appears that the humour rests in the fact that 'Jamaica' is confused for
”D'you make her?”, i.e. 'Did you make her go to the Caribbean?'. Try putting a different
final line on the joke, though. 'No, she chose to go.' contains exactly the same meaning
but, well, it's just not as funny, is it? It's all in the phrasing.
This may be one of the reasons why British humour doesn't translate into other
languages very well. When one translates, one keeps the meaning but the phrasing
changes, losing the basis of the humour.
The second secret of comedy to my mind is characterisation. By this, I mean the
creation of a character, or characters, by the comedian through which the jokes or
stories are told. Comedy is acting and, like any play, a great script in the wrong hands
can be a disaster and a terrible script in an expert's hands can be made into something
quite special.
I remember as a child watching the comedian Peter Sellers being interviewed on
the Parkinson show. Michael Parkinson, the studio audience, and my parents watching
with me at home were crying with laughter at everything that Sellers did or said. I sat
there thinking: 'He's just waving a handkerchief around. Nobody laughs when I do that.
Why are they laughing at him?' I now know what I didn't know then - that he was a
comic genius, and I'm not. And by that, I mean that he had the ability to create
characters that people found genuinely funny, whatever they did. He could have sat
there in silence and people would still have been laughing. And -let's be clear - even
though Sellers was appearing on a chat show supposedly as himself, he was in
character. As anyone who's read the biography of Peter Sellers by Roger Lewis knows,
Sellers off-stage was an incredibly violent and difficult man.
So is it possible to learn to be a comedian, or is it just a natural talent? There may
well be people who will never, ever succeed at being professional comedians however
hard they try.
Very few of us will ever be an Einstein, Mozart or Shakespeare in our respective
fields. However, all comedians will tell you that the more experience you get, the more
experienced, and therefore the better, you become. And they're not joking.
A14
In the first paragraph, the writer suggests that politicians
1) often attempt humour in their speeches.
2) are only successful if they are funny.
3) are used to facing empty audiences.
4) are no good at making people laugh.
A15
According to the text, 'slapstick' comedy
1) does not make use of language to be funny.
2) is different to the comedy of Benny Hill.
3) is only found in modern British humour.
4) does not exist in Britain anymore.
A16
The writer tells the joke about Jamaica to
1) demonstrate how many old jokes are not funny today.
2) explain why many jokes need two people to tell them.
3) show how the actual words used in a joke are important.
4) point out that some jokes contain confusing phrases.
A17
Whether a comedy act is 'a disaster' or 'something quite special'
1) the quality of the script being performed.
2) the ability of the performer to perform.
3) how much the act is like a play.
4) which character tells which joke.
A18
Watching the Parkinson show, the writer did not understand why
1) Peter Sellers was doing the things he was doing.
2) nobody was laughing at him at that moment.
3) Peter Sellers was a comic genius and he wasn't.
4) everyone laughed at Sellers doing ordinary things.
A19
The writer mentions a book by Roger Lewis to
1) enable people to find out more information about Peter Sellers.
2) prove that he hadn't made up the story about Peter Sellers.
3) make it clear that Peter Sellers often played unpleasant characters.
4) emphasize that Peter Sellers was acting during the chat show.
A20
In the final paragraph, the writer makes the point that
1) none of us can learn to be good comedians.
2) all comedians' skills improve through practice.
3) it's not worth trying to become a professional comedian.
4) Einstein, Mozart and Shakespeare weren't comedians.

Now we are ready to start.
Tapescript — B 1
Speaker 1: Yes, I do read quite a lot - books and magazines -but if you asked me
what my favourite books are, I'd have to say books for kids! I've got two kids of
my own, and once they've finished reading a book, they pass it on to me.
Children's literature these days is just so good! Take Harry Potter, for example.
Much funnier and more exciting than books written for adults.
Speaker 2: I've always loved reading - ever since I was a young child.
I can remember so clearly my mum teaching me to read. I loved every minute of it!
Whether I'll ever actually manage to write a book of my own in the future, I don't
know. But I'd really love to! It must be wonderful to see your name on the front of
a book in all the bookshops. I'm so jealous of writers!
Speaker 3:Well, I've got two twins, Sammy and Denise, and they're both three
years old now, so they're learning how to read right now. We read every day. I
read to them first, and then I try to get them to read the words back to me. I think
Denise is a little better than Sammy so far, but they're very competitive so I'm
sure that'll change!
Speaker 4: I've got hundreds of books at home, most of which I haven't read yet,
to be honest. And that's the problem. Time. When you're a kid there seems to be
loads of time for reading, but it's not the same when you're an adult. The only
time I have is on the train into work each morning. It's about a half-hour journey,
so I always take a book with me. It's a nice start to the day. I'm usually too tired to
read on the way home, though!
Speaker 5: I'm definitely what you would call a lover of books, and I studied
literature at university, actually, so I do like to think of myself as a bit of an expert.
But, and this will surprise you, I almost never go into bookshops. It's not that I
don't read -I do! But we've got a fantastic library in the town centre so I get my
books from there. I mean, what's the point of buying books when you can borrow
them from a library for free?
You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.) Now
you will hear the texts again. (Repeat.)
This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers.
Now we are ready to start.
Tapescript — A 1- 6
Teacher:
Hello, Jonathan. You wanted to see me about the school trip.
Jonathan:
Teacher:
Yes, miss. I wanted to check some of the details with you.
Ah, yes .You were absent when I went through the trip with
the rest of the class, weren't you? Okay.
What do you want to know?
Jonathan:
Well, I know we're flying to London next Friday at six, but
I'm not sure when to be at the airport.
Teacher: That's right. We'll be taking off at six, if we're not delayed. They say you
should be there two hours before your flight to give you plenty of time
to check in. Since we'll be checking in as a large group, we probably
won't need so long. Let's say ninety minutes before.
Jonathan: Four thirty?
Teacher:
Yes, that'll be fine. We should be in London about
four hours later, although there's a three-hour time
difference, so we'll be arriving at seven in the morning, local time.
Jonathan: Right. So it'll still be early morning. Will we be going straight
to the hotel?
Teacher:
That's right. We're all staying at the same hotel,
the Capital Park Hotel. Once we've collected
our bags from the airport, a mini-bus will take us to the hotel.
When we get there, I'll tell you all who you're sharing a room
with and I'll give you the keys.
Jonathan: Will we be spending long at the hotel?
Teacher:
I expect we'll all want to relax a little and maybe have a shower,
so we'll be staying at the hotel for a couple of hours, I imagine.
Jonathan: And then can we do what we like?
Teacher: Er ...no. I don't think that's a very good idea. I've actually
planned
what we're going to do quite carefully. We'll be taking it easy
the first day, so I've just planned two visits:
Madame Tussaud's after lunch, and before that, in the morning,
the Tower of London.
Jonathan: Are you sure there will be enough to do at those places?
Teacher:
Well, the other groups of students who have been there with me
in the past always enjoyed it, so I don't think you need
to worry about being bored! If anything, we might not have time
to see everything.
Jonathan: Okay. And then the next day?
Teacher: Well, I don't have time to go through each day in detail, but come
to see me at lunchtime and I'll give you a copy of the complete
timetable. Oh, there is one thing you can do. On the Tuesday, there
will be a choice of activity - either Kew Gardens with me or
the Natural History Museum with Mr Madinsky.
Jonathan: Erm ...I don't know anything about them.
Teacher: The Natural History Museum is one of the world's best nature museums and Kew
Gardens has displays of all kinds of plants from around the world.
Jonathan: I'm more interested in animals, so I guess I'd rather go to
the museum.
Teacher: Okay. I'll make a note of it. Now, don't forget to come back
at lunchtime for the timetable.
Jonathan: I won't. Thanks, miss.

Tapescript — A7-13
Situation 1
Man: Like everyone else, I've got a mobile, and I really don't know how anyone
lives without one. It can be really annoying when you leave home and forget to
take your mobile with you. I never use mine when I'm driving, though. There have
been too many cases where people haven't been concentrating on the road and
have been chatting and the next thing you know, bang. You really should stop to
make a call.
Situation 2
Man: It's called Digital Music and it comes out once a month. I never miss an
issue. I like writing my own music on my computer, and I even make my own CDs
to give away to friends. Well, Digital Music is all about that. They have great
articles by experts on how to get the most out of your programs. I think that's why
I get it, because I never read any of the interviews with musicians.
Situation 3
Woman: I went to Mary and Paul's wedding last month. Oh, what a disaster! Well,
the wedding itself was lovely. Mary was so beautiful in her dress and people had
come from all over the country to be there. Anyway, some of us were invited to a
meal after the wedding. We all got into our cars and drove to the restaurant, and
we had been therefore twenty minutes when we realized that Paul's parents
didn't know the way. It took them two hours to find us. They weren't happy, I can
tell you.
Situation 4
Girl: I've been having lessons for a few months now, and my test is in another
month. I was quite nervous at first, but you soon get used to it. My difficulty is the
road signs. There are so many to remember, and they just get mixed up in my
mind. I've got pictures of them on my bedroom wall to help me remember. I just
hope I get it right on the day.
Situation 5
Man: Crack Up is the great new game that everyone's playing! Simply take one of
the Crack Up cards and do what it tells you. If you can get everyone laughing at
your hilarious actions, you could be Crack Up champion! The question is, can you
do it without laughing yourself? Crack Up is for everyone, from eight to eighty!
Play Crack Up today.
Situation 6
Woman: I've got one brother, Terry, who's two years older than me. He went to
live in America about ten years ago. I've been out to see him a couple of times,
and we try to speak on the phone about once a month. It would be nice if he
could come here and see how I live, but he always seems to be working. We
were really close as children, but then you each have to live your own life.
Situation 7
Woman: Do you know the park round the corner? Well, I used to be frightened to
go in there at night and it was always such a mess, with rubbish everywhere.
They've done it up and put some flower beds in and more lights and it doesn't
look too bad now. Maybe local people will start to use it again.
