1. Fossil fuels
2. Pollution
5. Natural disasters
6. The ozone layer
3. Alternative energy
7. Recycling
4. Global warming
8. Deforestation
A. Scientists say the temperature of the earth could rise by 3°C over the next 50 years. This may
cause drought in some parts of the world, and floods in others, as ice at the North and South Poles
begins to melt and sea levels rise. Global warming is caused by the greenhouse effect. Normally,
heat from the sun warms the earth and then escapes back into space. But carbon dioxide and other
gases in the atmosphere trap the sun’s heat, and this is slowly making the earth warmer.
B. Recycling is the processing of used objects and materials so that they can be used again. About
60% of rubbish from homes and factories contain materials that could be recycled. Recycling saves
energy and raw materials, and also reduces damage to the countryside. Glass, paper and aluminium
cans can all be recycled very easily. Many towns have bottle banks and can banks where people can
leave their empty bottles and cans for recycling. A lot of paper bags, writing paper and greetings
cards are now produced using recycled paper.
C. Factories, power stations and motor vehicles pump large quantities of carbon dioxide and other
waste gases into the air. This is a major cause of the greenhouse effect. A lot of petrol contains lead,
which is very poisonous and can cause brain damage in children. Many people now prefer to use
unleaded petrol. Some poisonous gases dissolve in water in the atmosphere and then fall to the earth
as acid rain. Acid rain damages trees and buildings, and can kill fish in lakes and rivers. Rivers can
also be polluted by industrial waste from factories and chemical fertilizers and pesticides used by
farmers.
D. Rainforests help to control global warming because they absorb carbon dioxide. In recent years,
large areas have been destroyed, as the trees are cut down for wood or burned to clear the land for
farming. The burning releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Many rainforests
grow on poor soils, and when they are cut down or burned, the soil is washed away in the tropical
rains, so that the area may turn to desert. Many plant and animal species that live there could
become extinct.
E. The ozone layer is a layer of gas high above the surface of the earth that helps to protect it from
the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, which can damage our skins and cause cancer. Scientists have
recently
discovered
holes
in
the
ozone
layer,
caused
by
substances
called
CFCs
(chlorofluorocarbons). CFCs are used in refrigerators, aerosol cans and in the manufacture of some
plastic products. Some companies now make aerosols that do not contain CFCs, and these are often
marked 'ozone-friendly'.
F. Most of the energy we use today comes from coal, oil and gas. But these will not last forever, and
burning them is slowly harming the atmosphere. We need to look for other ways of supplying energy.
Solar power is a way of using the sun’s energy as heat or to make electricity. We can also use windpower by building modern windmills that spin in the wind. There are several types of water-power:
riverwater in mountainous areas can be used to generate hydroelectric power, and we can also
create electricity from sea water flowing in and out with the tides.
G. Floods, fires, earthquakes, tornados and windstorms affect thousands of people every year. Some
of the things you can do to prepare for the unexpected, such as a supply kit and an emergency plan,
are the same for all types of hazards. However each emergency is unique so it is necessary learn
about these specific threats and how to react in an emergency.

How to lose friends and alienate people
Have you ever been offended at not being invited to a party which everyone
else you know seems to have been to and had a good time at? Have you ever
told a joke that no one found very amusing? Making friends and influencing
people is a gift that a select few seem to be born with, A____. After all,
everyone likes to be popular. Although experts have written books on how to
make friends and influence people, for me, the first lessons I received go back
to when we were at primary school.
In our class, there was a boy no one liked. It wasn't because he was
disgusting, like, Billy Reilly, who chewed erasers and then spat out the pieces
onto his desk. Nor was he like Lorraine Smith, whose dad was the headmaster
of the school and B____. He was so desperate to be liked by the rest of us that
even the most tolerant amongst us couldn't stand him. The more he tried to be
liked, the less we liked him. The irony was C____. He shared his sweets, he
gave you the answers in tests and he gave great birthday parties.
But underneath, it gradually became obvious D____. He was totally selfcentred, but made it worse by pretending he cared about others. You could tell
from his voice E____. And he always managed to twist every topic of conversation back round to his favourite subject – the life and times of Edgar Price.
It was rather a dull story, anyway.
Another thing which made him difficult to like was that he was so
miserable. He was always predicting bad weather when there was a big
match on, infectious diseases when someone was off ill and earthquakes all
year round. We knew he just wanted attention. Once there really was an
earthquake and when Edgar said, "I told you so’, it did not make us like him
more.
I think it was an American president who once said, 'If you're talking, you
ain't listening’, and, in spite of the faulty grammar, there is an important
lesson here. The upshot of all this is F____ and if you want to be on good
terms with people, talking less and listening more is the golden rule for
becoming someone it is good to be with.
1. that on the surface Edgar Price should have been the most popular kid in
class
2. that Edgar cared only for one person – himself
3. that one should not try too hard to be liked
4. while for the rest of us it is a skill that needs to be practiced
5. at covering up his real feelings
6. who always wanted to be popular with the teachers
7. that his mind was on other things

обведите цифру 1, 2, 3 или 4, соответствующую выбранному Вами варианту
ответа.
Somewhere around February it begins. The drizzle is coming down outside
and the kids are bored on a Saturday afternoon. It’s usually then that my
husband decides it is time to plan our summer holiday. Out come the
brochures and the discussion begins.
It’s not that we’re an argumentative family, but it seems that where we are
to spend two weeks in the summer relaxing brings out the worst in us. Before
too long, we’re all insisting on places and refusing others, the volume steadily
increasing. My daughter discovers a lifelong ambition to go to India. Funny
how she never mentioned it before. My son isn’t going anywhere unless he
can bring his dog and my husband doesn’t mind where he goes as long as it’s
within five miles of a golf course.
As usual, it’s left to someone, and guess who, to find somewhere that
everybody is willing to accept (the dog goes to the neighbours, though). This
can take some weeks of persuading, reminding and convincing on my part, but
usually there’s a solution. Then it’s time to plan the packing. It seems that
everybody else believes that it can be done half an hour before we leave for
the airport. My husband lays out things he wants to take and I put them back
when he’s not looking and get out the real holiday clothes. My daughter wants
to take everything she owns. Each item she has to put back is the subject of
another argument.
Finally the day arrives and we get to the airport in plenty of time. This
happens because I start to shout five hours earlier that we are going in five
minutes, ready or not. Once at the airport, we check in. It sounds simple
enough, but the thing is that airports are full of people running around who
don’t know where to go. Not surprising since we only do it once a year and
we’ve forgotten where we went last time. We finally find the right desk, get
rid of the bags and go through to the departure lounge.
Somewhere around here I can finally think about relaxing. Not for me the
cold sweats, shaking, and nervous wondering about the plane. Everything is
somebody else’s problem. If there’s something wrong with the plane, the pilot
can worry about it. If a passenger has a heart attack, the stewards can worry
about it.
And so begin two weeks of relaxation. I learned long ago that the only way
to do it is to stop being called ‘Mum’. For those two weeks, whenever I hear
the word I look around as if it refers to someone else. I ignore any question
that begins with ‘Where’s my...’.The funny thing is that they always find it
anyway. The only thing I worry about is which book I ’m going to take to the
pool. My husband follows a ball around a course, my kids do whatever kids
do these days and I become myself again for a short while.
