Strong and dangerous weapons
The greatest anniversary festival
1. John Adams, a lawyer, the first Vice President and the second President of the United
States, was one of those who signed the Declaration of Independence. He wrote to
his wife: “I believe that it will be celebrated by the generations as the great
anniversary festival”. He may have predicted the later Independence Day
celebrations (every July 4) with these words.
2. Iron makes much stronger swords and knives than bronze. It was first used in Britain
by the Britons, who came from Gaul, or the country that we now call France, about
400 years B.C. With their iron weapons the Britons conquered a great part of the
country and gave it the name “Britain”.
3. Four hundred years ago books were so expensive that only the richest people could
buy them. As books were dear, rules were made for their use. They were not to be
touched with dirty hands, not to be put on the table at meal time. None was to eat
fruit or cheese while reading them. Books were dear in price, because every copy had
to be written by hand, and this was a long process. Monks spent their hours of leisure
in copying.
4. Thomas Jefferson had a lot of talents and interests. Once he stopped in a country inn
and had a talk with a stranger. The stranger mentioned some mechanical operations
and Jefferson’s knowledge of the subject convinced him that Jefferson was an
engineer. Then they got to talking about agriculture, and the stranger decided that
Jefferson was a farmer. More talk led the stranger to believe that Jefferson was a
lawyer, then a physician. The next day he asked the landlord the name of the man he
had spoken the night before. “Don’t you know him? That was President Jefferson!”
answered the landlord.
5. Much of today’s formal etiquette was developed in Europe in the Middle Ages. For
example, one of the earliest forms of etiquette was shaking hands. By holding out his
right hand, a knight could show that he didn’t have a weapon and that he came in
friendship.

The city of Oxford is like London. It is old and it is situated on the river Thames.
Oxford is a beautiful and a very green city. Green fields and parks surround it. Green
gardens with a lot of flowers and trees surround the colleges. The river Thames is situated
quite near the city.
Oxford has existed since 912. The university was founded in 1249. Today it consists of

from the middle of April to the end of June.
Examinations take place at the end of each term. If a student fails in an exam, he may
be allowed to take it again. Only two reexaminations are usually allowed.
The University of Oxford has a tutorial system of education: every student has a tutor
who plans his work. Each week some students come to see him, they discuss different
questions connected with their studies, they tell their tutor about the work they have done.
The students of Oxford spend their morning hours working. They have lectures and
seminars, or they study in the rooms. At two they have a dinner break which lasts till four.
After tea they continue their studies.

Emily:
Today, I’m very happy to have in my studio a famous British actress Emily
Downhill! Welcome Emily!
Hi, Bob!
Well, Emily, in your latest film called “Feel the Music”, you are a successful
lawyer, who has a great passion for painting. What about your real-life
hobbies? Do you have any?
I read a lot of books, and I’m a kind of writer. That’s what I mainly do when I
have time. I just love putting the words together and making up short stories.
I’m really in love with words. I also play guitar; I may sometimes go to music
shows. But not so often.
What is your favorite book then?
I actually have two. I just finished “Gone with the Wind” by Margaret
Mitchel. It’s a powerful novel. The other is “Lord of the Rings” By Tolkien. I
have read it three times already. I think Tolkien was really talented and wrote
great literature.
Emily, you have worked with Jason Cameron, the dream of most British
teenage girls. What was it like?
Jason doesn’t take things too seriously, he just acts. I mean, of course, he
thinks about it and cares about his work, but he’s always very relaxed, often
jokes and does foolish things. Being around someone like him is a lot of fun.
He makes you laugh a lot. I liked working with him. I felt, we were both
happy and satisfied with what came out of our roles.
The press discussed a lot your relationship with your mother. What’s it like
now? Will your new movie help mother and daughters better understand each
other?
I’m really lucky, because I have a picture-perfect relationship with my parents.
We get on really well together. But I definitely see my friends’ problems in
my heroine Lucy and her mom’s relationship. I feel that it’s a very typical
situation. I hope, this movie will open people’s eyes and help them cope with
their family issues.
How do you choose roles?
It’s always different. Sometimes I’m interested in working with a particular
filmmaker and a certain director. Sometimes I’ll do a movie because there are
one or two scenes I really want to do. Actually, I think it’s important to do
Bob:
Emily:
movies that are worth watching, something that is thought-provoking and
gives you ideas to analyze.
And the last question, Emily. What advice would you give others interested in
acting?
If there is anything you really want to do, you have to go for it. Otherwise
you’ll just regret it forever. You should have no regret in life. It’s strange that
people always ask actors for advice and it’s like wow, she said that? I don’t
know how useful we can be. We’re just people.
