7. One on the basis of two
8. Location of the museum
A. The present Ashmolean Museum was created in 1908 by combining two ancient Oxford institutions: the University Art
Collection and the original Ashmolean Museum. The older partner in this merger, the University Art Collection, was based
for many years in what is now the Upper Reading Room in the Bodleian Library.
B. The collection began modestly in the 1620s with a handful of portraits and curiosities displayed in a small room on the
upper floor. In the 17th century there were added notable collections of coins and medals later incorporated into the
Ashmolean coin collection. The objects of curiosity included Guy Fawkes' lantern and a sword given by the Pope to Henry
VIII, and a number of more exotic items.
C. In the 1660s and 70s, the collection grew rapidly and, in 1683, the Bodleian Gallery was left to develop as a museum
of art. At first, it was a gallery of portraits of distinguished contemporaries, but from the mid 1660s, it began to acquire a
more historical perspective with the addition of images of people from the past: college founders, scientists, soldiers,
monarchs, writers and artists.
D. In the eighteenth century, several painters donated self-portraits. They also added a number of landscapes, historical
paintings and scenes from contemporary life. Other donors, former members of the University, added collections of Old
Masters so that by the early nineteenth century, it had become an art gallery of general interest and an essential point of
call on the tourist map. The public was admitted on payment of a small charge. Catalogues were available at the
entrance and the paintings were well displayed in a large gallery.
E. It was only with the gift of a collection of ancient Greek and Roman statuary from the Countess of Pomfret in 1755
that the need for a new art gallery became urgent. The marble figures were too heavy to be placed in an upstairs gallery
and were installed in a dark ground-floor room in the library pending the creation of a new museum.
F. Before the new museum was finished, a major group of drawings by Raphael and Michelangelo was purchased by
public subscription for the new galleries, establishing the importance of the Oxford museum as a centre for the study of
Old Master drawings. The new museum also attracted gifts of paintings. In 1851, a collection of early Italian paintings,
which included Uccello's "Hunt in the Forestone of the museum's major works of art was presented.
G. In the 1850s, the University established a new Natural History Museum, which is now known as the Oxford University
Museum of Natural History. And all the natural history specimens from the Ashmolean were transferred to the new
institution. Having lost what had become the most important element in its collection, the Ashmolean was to find a major
new role in the emerging field of archaeology.

Lost in the Heat
Polina didn't want to move to America. At the age of 12, she was very set in her ways and did not welcome change.
She had a group of friends whom she had known since nursery school and enjoyed hanging out with. She also could
hardly speak any English, so she doubted she would be able to make any new friends.
Her father was selected to be a Russian representative for the International Space Station project to NASA. They
were moving to Houston, Texas, for a year. First, she imagined Texas to be desert with cowboys riding around on
horses. When she found out that Houston was a big city, however, she imagined skyscrapers.
The reality turned out completely different.
Nobody actually lived in the city. It was surrounded by many suburbs, which were really just small towns. They lived
in a suburb called Katy, in a neighborhood with houses that all looked the same as if stamped out by identical cookiecutters.
She had really been afraid of the heat. On the big wall map they had in Moscow she had seen that Houston was the
same latitude as Africa. But now she barely noticed it because of the blasting freezing air-conditioning everywhere: in
the car, in every store, and at home. Every time she stepped outside, however, she was assaulted by the overpowering
heat.
Her parents were off at work, so she found herself alone most of the time. She tried watching TV but couldn't
understand anything. She thought about chatting with her friends back in Moscow, but then remembered that it was the
middle of the night on account of the time difference.
That was when she decided to go for a walk. She knew it would be scorchingly hot, but she felt suffocated sitting
inside. So she lathered up with sunscreen, laced up her sneakers and went outside.
The full force of the heat was like a blazing furnace. But after a while she got used to it. She walked along the street,
thinking about how strange it was here. In Moscow, everyone lived in apartment buildings with courtyards. In the
summer, there would be lots of people out strolling, enjoying themselves. Here she didn't see a single person. An
occasional car passed by but that was it.
She kept walking aimlessly until she stumbled upon a highway. To her left, there was a field with cows. Beyond this
small oasis of country life, other housing communities were visible in the distance, mirroring the one she lived in. Further
down the highway was a small convenience store. She was thirsty so she walked there to get a drink.
When she opened the door, she felt frosty relief from the heat. The cashier looked up, smiled and said,
"How’re you doing? It sure is a scorcher today ain't it?"
Polina had no idea what he was talking about, so she just stared at him.
"What's wrong, little darling, cat got your tongue?" he asked, but she just paid and left.
She didn't notice which direction she was going and ended up in a neighborhood she assumed was hers. Everything
looked familiar. It was only when she couldn't find her house that she knew she was totally lost. She was sweating and
feeling dizzy and when everything started going black, she remembered the cows. She should have looked for the field
with cows to get back. That was her last thought...
When she woke up, she was lying in a hospital bed. Her mom and dad were there.
“What happened?” she inquired.
A nurse didn't understand the language, but guessed her question.
"You're lucky to be alive little lady, you had a heat stroke. Guess you know now why people don't go on walks in the
Texas heat!"

How many planets are there in the solar system? Eight. If you still think there’s nine you’ve obviously
been living in a parallel solar system. Planets must fulfil three criteria: they have to orbit the sun, have
enough mass to be spherical, and to have cleared the neighbourhood around their orbit. Pluto only managed
the first two, so was demoted to the status of dwarf planet.
It’s not perfect. Some astronomers argue that neither Earth, Jupiter or Neptune have cleared their orbits
either. But it does resolve the mysterious position of Pluto. Even the planet’s discoverers weren’t fully
convinced of its status. Pluto is much smaller than all the other planets, a fifth the mass of the Moon and
smaller than seven of the moons of other planets. It isn’t much larger than its own main moon. Its orbit is
eccentric and on a different plane from the other planets, and its composition is completely different.
