A LFIRA A RSLANOVA E DITOR-IN- CHIEF OF «ITI-INFO» N2 2010 ITI-INFO N2 2010 ITI-INFO 7 INTERNATIONAL DANCE DAY n 1982 the Dance Committee of the ITI founded International Dance Day to be celebrated every year on the 29th April, anniversary of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), the creator of modern ballet. The intention of the «International Dance Day Message» is to celebrate Dance, to revel in the universality of this art form, to cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers and bring people together with a common language – Dance. Every country organizes national and international dance projects to commemorate this Day. In Russia last April was marked by the national contest of young ballet dancers open also for foreign dancers «Arabesque 2010». The final gala and prize awarding ceremony were held on April 29th in Perm. On this day we must say few words about our colleagues who passed away. World dance community mourned the loss of some very respected and famous colleagues. Among them Ekaterina Maksimova (Russia), famous ballerina, solo dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet, great Butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno (Japan), Executive director of the New York International Ballet Competition and President of the International Dance Committee of the ITI between 1995 and 2008 Ilona Copen (USA). We keep them in our memories! Every year a message from an outstanding choreographer or dancer is circulated throughout the world. The personality is selected 8 ITI-INFO N2 2010 Kazuo Ohno and diversity of human heritage.» In his message 1985 Robert Joffrey pointed out: «Dance, in all its splendid and various forms, encompasses the old and traditional with the new and experimental in a rich mosaic that transcends national boundaries… Dance is a powerful ally for mutual understanding and communication as nations strive for peace, friendship and freedom». Later the message was written by Chetna jalan> Robert Howard, Doris Laine, Merce Cunningham, Hans Van Manen. Germaine Acogny, Maguy Marin, Maia Plissetskaia, Maurice Bejart, Kazuo Ohno, Mahmoud Reda, Alicia Alonso, Jiri Kylian, Cyri Lesueur, William Forsythe, Katherine Dunham, Mats Ek, Stephen Page, Miyako Yoshida, Prince Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia, Sasha Waltz, Gladys Agulhas, Akram Khan, Julio Bocca. by the founding entity of the International Dance Day - the International Dance Committee of the ITI, which collaborates with World Dance Alliance, a Cooperating Member of the ITI. The very first international message was written by Henrik Neubauer (Slovenia, 1982). At that time Henrik was Secretary of the International Dance Committee. He wrote about his message: «This day should represent an opportunity for better understanding among people who should stand united for all noble and progressive ideas, for peace and friendship through the art of dance. The second message was written in 1984 by the President of the Dance Committee Yuri Grigorovich: «The best pieces of dance art are penetrated by the ideas of freedom and reflect their national features, traditions and aspirations. Thus, so rich and diverse the international dance art is, reflecting the best achievements of dance in art of dance of the world. Authentic dance culture of all peoples makes a great panorama of richness N2 2010 ITI-INFO The production was to be staged by Anatoly Vasiliev, who announced a few years prior his decision to discontinue his work in Russia in the capacity of theater director and teacher. However Anatoly Iksanov’s offer proved to be so significant to him that he accepted, intending to use this production to «conclude his theatrical journey.» However «the housing problem» hampered such grandiose plans – due to an acute shortage of rehearsal facilities, it was impossible to create the conditions necessary for the director. Nevertheless, the Bolshoi will not be left without a «Don Juan», nor without Anatoly Vasiliev, who agreed to do a production of a different historical opera in 2014 (the exact title is presently under discussion). And «Don Juan» is currently in rehearsals with Dmitry Chernyakov, who was responsible for successful productions of «Eugene Onegin» and «Wozzeck» on the Bolshoi stage. Of course this particular production of «Don Juan» will not be exclusive to the Bolshoi Theater, but, rather, a joint project with the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Madrid’s Teatro Real and the Canadian Opera Company. The premiere screenings will take place at the Aix-en-Provence Festival from July 1st to the 20th, and on October 29th, as was promised, «Don Juan» will move to the Bolshoi and settle there until February of 2013, when it will head to Madrid and Toronto. «Bamboo dreams» in Udmurtia and in Marquis de Sade’s castle I zhevsk is lucky because a contemporary choreographer Elena Bogdanovich works down there. When celebrities perform contemporary choreography, it draws attention to contemporary dance. And the production of «Poor Liza» features famous actress Chulpan Hamatova and the Bolshoi Theatre’s leading dancer Andrei Merkuryev. Merkuryev has a clever, precise and pointedly caustic manner, as he walks through the choreographic language of Erast – a capricious young man, who fell in love with a florist named Liza. Chulpan Hamatova has sharp arms, elbows at right angles, squirrel-like ultrafast gesticulation, back that arches backwards almost to the point of breaking (all joking aside, the «arch of hysteria», utilized by the female dance modernists of the beginning of last century, was something they discovered in female psychiatric wards). Hamatova performed the part of Liza so brilliantly and in such a dramatically pointed manner that she managed to rise to the level of and even to outdo Merkuryev’s solo, trumping the man that grew up on the ballet classics at the Mariinsky Theatre and the contemporary choreography of Neumeier, Ratmansky and Forsythe to become a unique dancer of his time. Contemporary Choreography Theatre under the direction of Irina Afonina made its debut in the competitive program with the production of «The Dormitory» by Yekaterina Kislova. This production brings us back to the simple things – our relationships with our family and friends, our neighbors; the dormitory is regarded as the model for the world order. Performing on stage that evening were Egor Maslov, Lika Shevchenko, Mikhail Kolegov and Ekaterina Nedoseikina – some of Moscow’s best contemporary dancers and the Theatre’s child alumni. Olga Pona’s Chelyabinsk Theatre of Contemporary Dance demonstrated its new production «A Man Is Muzhik Who Has Found His Identity». The show illustrates the following quote by Viktor Erofeyev: «A Russian muzhik gets back to his feet from all fours. Let’s switch from the old fingers-throughour-hair to a comb, from an armored car to perfume, from foul language to English, from moonlighting jobs to profits, from literature to television, from collective farm to private business, from drinking sprees to cocktail receptions, from humiliation to male dignity.» During the half-hour of stage time six male dancers get up from all fours and awkwardly but surely move toward the podium, where they perform a spectacular fashion defile – a grand introduction of male conquerors that have grown comfortable in the modern world. A year and a half ago, their production of «I Wish You Had Understood Me…» received the Grand Prix of the International Festival of Modern Choreography in Vitebsk, Belarus. Dennis Boroditsky has a gymnastic past, and he also worked in Igor Moiseyev’s ensemble. But it was his work in the American dance company Bill T. Jones that became his main aesthetic influence. Borodistky’s choreography is of pro-American persuasion: powerful soft lines, energetic foot and leg work, strong flying hands, American geometry of thought as a whole. Larisa Alexandrova’s production of «Casting Off» for «Evgeny Panvilov’s Ballet» Theatre of Perm is compositely arranged, successful from a dramaturgic perspective and tells the story of how girls want to get married and how poorly they later fare in marriage. First there is a band of neat wind-up dolls that march to the rhythm of the «acceptable» contemporary dance, but then everything seems to go mad – the wind-up figurines move discordantly out of time, yearning for freedom and happiness. The grooms pick them up, shower them with flowers, shove them inside the stiff carcasses of the wedding skirt-houses, from which the girls cannot escape without outside help. New movements appear as more complex in In Olga Pona’s Dance Theatre in Chelyabinsk there are many dancers from whom we could learn more about new male identity 24 ITI-INFO N2 2010 relation to the already established ones. As proof of that is the production of «Dido and Aeneas» by the distinguished American choreographer Mark Morris to the music of Henry Purcell, first performed in 1989 in the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie of Brussels as part of the «Legendary Performances and Names» program. The plot of this ancient Greek tragedy about Dido, who killed herself over Aeneas’s betrayal, is embodied in a historically appropriate dance language: it is as if antique vase drawings suddenly came to life. The musicality of Mark Morris came through full force in «Dido»: one cannot say that music was used in this production. Rather here they serve the music, and the action mostly resembles strict liturgy, filled with the language of modern dance. When watching «Dido», one can clearly see that the Modern Age originates from Greece, and that the ancient Greek tragedy is best recreated with the language of modernist dance. It was by lucky accident that Moscow had the occasion to see the choreography of a New York based company «Aszure Barton and Artists»: having found out that «Dido and Aeneas» is heading to the Golden Mask Festival, the U.S. Department of State offered to bring Aszure Barton’s company along as well and took active Sergey Fonton Minsk choreographers Dmitry Zalesski and Olga Skvortsova create miracles on the cross line of tradition and modern approach THE MODERN AGE ORIGINATES FROM GREECE, AND THAT THE ANCIENT GREEK TR AGEDY IS BEST RECREATED WITH THE LANGUAGE OF MODERNIST DANCE. Both the Baryshnikov Arts Center, which has enjoyed a long and fruitful collaboration with Aszure Barton, and Canadian Consulate’s Fine Arts Department (Barton was born in Canada) took part in the creation of this production. «Busk» is a scintillating mix of musical-inspired jazz style, street dance, elements of cabaret dance and street pantomime (a busker is a street musician) set on a solidly woven lyrical core. The most striking episodes of «Blue soup» are mass ritual dances, performed by dancers dressed in bright turquoise lounge suits. The merging of the ballet tradition and ethnic originality resulted in a «centaur»-dancer that triumphs in a macabre pas de deux one minute and exults in a savage prayer the next. Stomping loudly with their bare feet, digging their heels firmly into the floor, the New Yorkers unraveled our perception: an infectious dancer creates a spectator, creates the present, the here and now. Barton’s company energetically realizes the best ideas of dance modernism of the early 20 th century. A powerful, strong gesture that awakens the best feelings in the spectator, the will to live. Barton, ever loyal to modernist traditions, expertly gives meaning to the impulse of dance modernism, born in response to the war of 1905. The rainbow of feelings and the truth of everyday life that was embodied in dance at the 2010 Golden Mask Festival gave great pleasure to all fans of the unorthodox dance mentality. Seven European choreographers, who wanted very much to work in Russia, staged their productions in seven Russian contemporary dance companies that were willing to try any type of an experiment. The diplomatic level of this event is capable of changing the political will with regards to Russian contemporary dance. As a result, the European contemporary dance understood that everything in Russia is not as hopeless as it seemed, and the Russian one understood that everything in Europe is not as rosy as it appeared. The new combinations of common advantages and disadvantages can now be created directly, on a private level. Productions created within the framework of Intradance remain in theaters’ repertories, the European Union wants to take them back to Europe (the grant didn’t plan for these expenses) in order to test the viability of those productions on its own public and see whether it is worth to continue supporting the choreographers. WAKE UP AND GO TO WORK The Danish choreographer Lotte Sigh set her production of «The Good, the Bad and You» in collaboration with Nail Ibragimov’s Kazan chamber ballet «Panther». Thanks to Intradance Moscow's general public saw this wonderful team for the first time. «Panthers» always managed to impress with their magnificent technique, 30 ITI-INFO N2 2010 «Far Away From Here» Liquid Theater (Moscow) Choreographer Victor Hugo Pontes (Portugal) delicate artistry, palpable stream of energy. Lotte Sigh wrote for them a very «physical», very spectacular show with high injury risk – the dance lexicon proposed by her presupposes traumas. The theme of violence and suppression of one man by another continued to manifest itself in a number of other productions as well. Violence and loneliness is the leitmotif of contemporary European dance choreography, which has pinned it as timely for years, while lacking the resolve and the responsibility to express its attitude toward it. The blurred ethical evaluation of oneself and the surrounding world does little to help contemporary choreography develop. The artistic search splashes about in stagnant waters of caution and lack of clear aesthetic manifestations. In that context the arrival of European choreographers to Russia can be viewed as an attempt at developing new aesthetic forms with new human material. «True Style» by German choreographer Christoph Winkler was produced in collaboration with the ёd Physical Theater of Saint Petersburg, which wrote funny texts for the show on the subject of «Why we are here»: «Artyom is here because he left the Eifman ballet,» «Sasha is here because he moved from Cherepovets,» «Tanya is here because she dropped gymnastics, and because she is compact.» Winkler created a charming medley of everything that interests him – folk and disco dance, hip-hop and conceptual N2 2010 ITI-INFO 31 Kind attitude to the neighbour and to the one who follows you. Olga Pona’s Theater in Chelyabinsk Optical illusion: gain a foothold. Production of «Far away from here» of the «Liquid Theater» and choreographer Victor Hugo Pontes of Portugal performance. Ad’s strength is its clownery. Our contemporary dance is so serious with regard to itself, so unsmiling – and Artyom Ignatiev, Alisa Panchenko, and, especially, Alexander Lyubashin and Tanya Tarabanova have every prospect of forming its unique image following the path of dance clownery. «Cow Parsnip… A True Story» by Rachid Ouramdane is co-produced with Irina Brezhneva’s Migrazia Project from Kirov. There is no music or choreography in «Cow Parsnip». There are sounds and the swaying, which can be considered as the characteristic oriental meditative «sway», THE EUROPEAN DANCE UNDERSTOOD THAT EVERYTHING IN RUSSIA IS NOT AS HOPELESS, THE RUSSIAN ONE UNDERSTOOD THAT EVERYTHING IN EUROPE IS NOT AS ROSY. 32 ITI-INFO N2 2010 but the majority viewed the performance, where somnambulist dancers walked around on stage for an hour, as a challenge and a provocation. «I was interested to see how viable my work would be with the new audience,» says Ouramdane. «I did what I usually do on principle. The ensemble from Kirov is not much different from a company from the suburbs of Paris. I always try to change the level of sensitivity of the company and the audience, and I don’t always choose an easy way to do it.» It’s an admirable statement, but the production had about as much audience appeal, as one would get from watching someone sleep. As a matter of fact, Ouramdane’s words characterize very well the persistent fixation, canonization of aesthetic successes of European contemporary dance of the last decades. From that perspective Russia is just another local market, where one can «sell» the already formed language of the dance and also check that language’s viability and flexibility. The picturesque world and plasticity of movement in the production of «This Is Not a Love Song» by Dutch choreographers Uri Ivgi and Johan Greben in collaboration with Tatyana Baganova’s Provincial Dances Theater of Yekaterinburg originated from performances of Israel’s Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company, where Ivgi worked. We saw the defense-capable Israeli choreography, powerful and filled with elements of Middle Eastern pagan dances, with «squatty» springing legs, collective shamanistic rituals. In «This Is Not a Love Song» those were transformed into dances of protest aimed at the enemies of Israel and totalitarianism in general. The overarching social metaphysics were present only in the music. The aggressive lexicon of the dance, the grey prisoncamp clothes and pistol fingers defined the theme, but the production didn’t quite make it as a show about totalitarianism. By its very nature contemporary dance captivates the audience only when a performer lives it, when they lend it their breath, their energy, their personal attitude toward its subject. «This Is Not a Love Song» is not the only production we would like to wish this upon. Portuguese choreographer Victor Hugo Pontes produced his «Far Away From Here» in collaboration with Moscow’s Liquid Theater. Famous for its street performances, its plays with space, the Liquid Theater now needed to develop its acting technique, and it managed to do just that. The small and light Svetlana Kim, who danced her parts better than everyone else, also turned out to be a wonderful singing «This is not a love song» of the Urals Theater «Provincial dances» is full of protest dances dramatic actress: her willingness to experiment and to overload was fostered in her by Gennady Abramov’s Class of Expressive Plastic Movement. We would like to recognize as successful the production of «Mirlifor» by Belgian choreographer Karine Ponties in collaboration with the Dialogue Dance Company from Kostroma. «Mirlifor» was memorable thanks to its well-structured and psychologically sound human relations, the irony-filled dance on the subject of people embittered with each other. The performance has delicately ridiculed puerility, so incredibly tiresome in the adults. OlgaPona’sChelyabinskTheaterofContemporary Dance performed the choreography of Asier Zabaleta of Spain in the production of «Next» that talks about the power of the collective, about how it can endow a man with strength one minute and spit him out the next. The theme of loneliness is resolved without aggression, by means of comprehensible lexicon. A discussion between people, who have different perceptions of the dance, is anything but simple. All-in-all we were disappointed by the use of only a small part of the dance alphabet. The isolation of contemporary dance from the process of development of the world culture is both strange and sad. Such isolation contradicts the original ideas behind the free dance, for it must and can be understood by anyone who is interested in experimenting with movement. Ideally contemporary dance is infinitely diverse and unpredictable, like the utopian «free man», and nothing prevents us from furthering that ideal, enriching it and aspiring to it. When he came to try out for the school, Yuri Solomin brought along his father (a famous musician and teacher in Chita), who was robbed, while his son was going through one of the selection rounds. They managed to arrange for a free return ticket for his father, but they needed to leave right away. But the eternal themes remain. tsar Fyodor, Trigorin, Protasov, Famusov and One shouldn’t hurry or push back time. And if many others. But it was the part of Cyrano de one theme doesn’t work today, there is no need Bergerac, given to him by Tsarev, that became to over-accentuate it; the classics have many his favorite one. «One time Mikhail Ivanovich 40 ITI-INFO N2 2010 «Molier» by Bulgakov Tsarev called me into this office. We talked about different subjects, and then he asked me point-blank: «Do you have a dream?» Since the conversation turned this way, I replied: «Cyrano.» – «Well, it’s a good play.» During the meeting of the Arts Council Tsarev carefully avoided the question of who will play Cyrano. And in the end I got the part, which I believe to be the best one in my life. I would have continued playing it, but I got badly hurt once during a performance.» But at least the actors of the Maly Theater know that their art director will be very understanding of their artistic dream. Exactly half a century ago (and at the instigation of the very same Vera Pashennaya) Yuri Solomin took part in a movie for the first time, and several years later he woke up famous all over the country. The movie «The Adjutant of His Excellency» paved the way for him not only to the Mount Olympus of the national cinema, but also to the international stage. When Akira Kurosawa was looking for an actor to play Arseniev in the movie «Dersu Uzala», it was «The Adjutant of His Excellency» that made up his mind. And in the meantime the thread of destiny kept on spinning. One day Kurosawa made it slip that Solomin-san could be a director as well, and when Yuri Mefodievich was offered for the first time to stage a show, this blessing given to him by the cult film director played a crucial part in his consent. Actor, director, teacher, art director, president of Russian National Centre of ITI – these «leading roles» are sometimes joined by «supporting roles.» One of those is the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation. Solomin didn’t hold that office for a long time, but he was able to accomplish a lot: during the two years he managed to obtain the repeal of many obsolete, Soviet-era laws and to increase the financing of the culture by a whole two percent. The list of awards that were conferred on him is equally fantastic and diverse: from an FSB award to a Japanese medal «For Contributions to World’s Culture», from different grades of «Orders of Merit for the Fatherland» to an asteroid number 10054, named in his honor. But a good role remains his chief reward. Last year, after a lengthy break, he finally played the part that greatly enriched his already impressive acting biography – the part of Bulgakov’s Moliere (incidentally, it was the first time that Bulgakov’s play was staged at the Maly Theater). And, perhaps for the first time in the history of this play’s performance, it wasn’t the struggle against the cabal and the Sun Tyrant, nor the backstage theater squabbles that were in the spotlight, but rather life itself, where there is nothing more terrible than infamy and nothing more beautiful than art. The organizers of the Festival try to follow established principles and priorities. Some of them are declared in the name – «Monobaltija». Actually, both years the festival program includes performances of all three Baltic countries and most of their neighbours. It is worthwhile to mention Estonian performances of the last year's and present program – «the Cock from the abc-book» with actor Tonu Oja 44 ITI-INFO N2 2010 in monodrama. She made a number of extraordinary performances, in particular, «Oh, Happy days» by S.Beckett and «Antigone» by Sophocles. This year another Lithuanian actress Nijole Narmontajte presented her new work – performance «C’est la vie» about formation and creative destiny of an actress. The festival presented also performances from Latvia, Poland, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Hungary and, it’s a pleasure to say, from Russia. Our country was represented by a performance with a remarkable actor from St.Petersburg Sergey Barkovsky («Village Goryukhino Story» by A.S.Pushkin. It was an outstanding piece of work, in particular, for acting. Today there is a number of international monodrama festivals working one after another. In January took place the festival in Fujairah (United Arab Emirates). It differs from other festivals for large representation of countries of the Arabic region. European theatre in the program of this festival has the status of guest and is accepted in small doses. This year the Russian performance for the first time has taken part in this festival. It was Vassili Shukshin’s «Before the third Cry of the Cock» with an actor from Samara Oleg Belov (director of the show – Oleg Skivko). Next August in Khmelnitskiy (Ukraine) will take place the festival «Vidlunnya» which, due to financial problems, moved from Kiev. In September in Kiev will be the festival «Maria» (it is devoted to women’s monodrama). The head of the festival, remarkable Ukrainian actress Larissa Kadyrova organizes programs concentrated on some concrete artistic themes. Two last festivals were devoted to Garcia Marquez and Nikolay Gogol. This year the festival will be dedicated to Anton Chekhov. Russia will participate in this festival with a show from Volgograd with Zinaida Gurova (Chekhov’s «Sweetheart»). By the way, this actress owns her One Woman Show Theater in Volgograd and organizes International Monodrama Festival. In October Dzintra Kletnice will organize international festival «Zvaizgne» in Riga. The same month we organize the international one man show festival in Moscow. In November Wieslaw Geras will invite monodrama productions to his international festival WROSTJA in Wroclaw (in the program will be presented a Polish-Russian project – two performances with a Polish and a Russian actors. Russian actor is Vsevolod Chubenko from Vologda). It is necessary to notice that along with the above-mentioned festivals, there are others – in Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Czech Republic, Armenia. RUSSIA’S MAIN INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL, NAMED AFTER CHEKHOV, TAKES PLACE TWICE A YEAR, AND THIS YEAR IT IS PRESENTED IN AN UNUSUAL FORMAT. FIRST OF ALL, IT IS TAKING PLACE OUTSIDE ITS REGULARLY SCHEDULED TIME; SECONDLY, IT IS FULLY ASSOCIATED WITH CHEKHOV, WHOSE NAME, UNTIL NOW, RARELY APPEARED IN THE FESTIVAL’S PROGRAMS. W 50 ITI-INFO N2 2010 «Multiplicity. Forms of Silence and Emptiness» Fernando Marcos e owe that to Anton Pavlovich’s 150 th anniversary and to the artistic energy of festival’s managing director Valery Shadrin, who convinced numerous leading figures of international theater – partly because he agreed to become involved in financing of joint productions – to turn their attention to Chekhov and to create a show on the subject of «My Chekhov». As a result, some of those artists buried themselves in Chekhov, while for others he served as a starting point, which is demonstrated by the very titles of the performances: «CherryBrandy», «The Whisper of Flowers», «Nameless Poison», «DONKA», «The Infinite Orchard», «The Brothers Ch», «Composition ad hoc», «Tararabumbia» and so on and so forth. In addition, the current festival will expand to the maximum the scope of the genre – to include ballet and even the circus. Though, admittedly, it looks like we have already seen the main artistic provocation – the production titled «To Moscow! To Moscow!» by a German radical Frank Castorf, who combined Chekhov’s «Three Sisters» with «Peasants» and topped this misalliance with a lot of scathing ad-libbing. Without a moment’s hesitation, Mr. Castorf forces unattractive infantile Prozorovs and other Vershinins to answer before history for allowing some Natashas to reign in their country (the word «reign» is meant literally: at the end of the show Natasha sits on a chair in a royal hat and spouts off about the Chosen People). French choreographer Josef Nadj («CherryBrandy») combined in his production the various points of Georg Cantor’s theory of sets, Osip Mandelstam’s poem «I will tell you the utmost candor», one of Varlam Shalamov’s scariest «Kolyma Tales» – about the death of Mandelstam – and Chekhov’s «Swan Song (Kalhas)». Japanese choreographer Jo Kanamori was inspired by «The Black Monk» and «Ward No. 6» – but not by Chekhov’s stories themselves, but rather by «Chekhov’s torment». Daniele Finzi Pasca, a Swiss of Italian descent, the founder of Teatro Sunil – a poetic author’s circus, – headed to Taganrog in search of a story for his show, saw Chekhov’s house, learned the word «donka» (a N2 2010 ITI-INFO 51 weighted line for bottom-fishing) and came up with a performance that will probably be subject to obstruction on the part of certain circus aficionados (after all, what kind of a circus is it, where so many stunts end in failure?), but will be understood by Chekhov’s readers, for whom the cry «Life is over» is not an empty phrase. Two other cult choreographers picked «The Cherry Orchard» – Taiwanese Lin Hwai-min and Swedish Mats Ek. Lin Hwai-min attempted to hear «The Whisper of Flowers» (the title of his version of interpretation of Chekhov’s play) and to make out Ranevskaya’s late mother, walking along in «Donka» the orchard – in short, all the things that cannot be seen nor heard by ordinary eyes and ears – in other words, that which is most important. One of this orchard’s omens is the wind that covers the stage first with delicate rose petals and later – with black strands of hair. Death and disintegration «make up» the unique plasticity of dancers, who are capable of combining the martial arts technique with classical ballet like no one else in the world. But universal calm descends upon the residents of the cherry orchard on the other side of the unique curtain of light. Among the Russian productions the audience can look forward to «Chekhov Gala», a composition based on Anton Pavlovich’s five one-act plays and directed by Alexei Borodin, and «Composition ad hoc» («The Man in a Case») by Dmitri Tcherniakov, who has in recent years developed a reputation for being the opera direction’s main hope, as well as Alexander Galibin’s «The Brothers Ch» that is based on a play by Yelena Gremina, dedicated to the complicated relations «Chekhov Gala» between the sons of Pavel Egorovich Chekhov. The mood of Gremina’s play is very similar to Donald Rayfield’s book about Chekhov and is practically «threaded through» with motifs and even direct quotations from Chekhov’s plays. But the actors managed to convey with astonishing precision its main theme – the birth of an enormous talent, (a human talent, first and foremost), in the atmosphere of combusting loves, the lack of understanding on the part of the family, of people so hated and so loved, in the bustle of literary hackwork. The honor of concluding the festival falls to the living classic of international choreography Nacho Duato, whose ballets are gradually becoming more familiar to the Russian audience as well («Na Floresta» at the Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater, «Cor Perdut» («Lost Heart»), produced for Svetlana Zakharova). The festival’s final chord has no longer anything to do with Chekhov, but it makes a perfect segue to the next festival, which will take place in 2011 under the label «To Moscow! To Moscow!» Vladimir Vyatkin «The Whisper of Flowers» 52 ITI-INFO N2 2010 Viviana Cangialosi «The Whisper of Flowers» of «World Series». Nacho Duato’s famous ballet «Multiplicity. Forms of Silence and Emptiness» was produced back in 1999, commissioned by Weimar, which was then designated as Europe’s Cultural Capital. A brief biopic recounting the dramatic life of «the world’s chief composer», Bach, gives way to an abstract part – a hymn to music and the multiplicity of its forms, many of which were discovered by Bach himself. Nacho Duato, who only began studying ballet in earnest at the age of eighteen (until then, afraid of being mocked by his family, he would secretly repeat the moves after his ballerina sisters), might himself dance in Moscow the part of the main character, the composer who is both the ruler and the prisoner of sounds (represented by other dancers), that were obeying his bow, but were ready to engulf him at any moment. One of the ballet’s culminating scenes is the famous duet of Bach and his muse, the cello: the sweet torture of the birth of music has long become a hit of many ballet festivals. And now Moscow residents will also be able to see this masterpiece live. «Bach is present in every music» – and doctor Chekhov’s every text is born out of the spirit of music. Later free approach to classics became professional mark of the director. He says he likes to surprise people. Or even to shock them. «Swan Lake» born in 1995 looks a revolutionary piece of art even today. Male chorus line – swans with denuded torso and in feather covered drawers – was a real shock for admirers of classic art. The fact two men dance in couple under Tchaikovsky’s music excited imagination of the audience. But in Prince and Swan’s duet the definitely expressed sexual component was not any longer present. The choreographer’s favorite theme of doubles sounds here although Swan was a character expressing the Prince’s N2 2010 ITI-INFO 61 «Play without Words» aspiration for personal independence. And his double tightened in black leather symbolized bad features of the character. Sexuality like a color was always present in Bourne’s chorography but this time it had some vicious and painful taste. Both, director’s sincerity, his sense of humor and taste of parody added some special charm to the production. Although the scene when the flight of embittered swans does not accept the Prince and ruins their leader made a shrill and touching impression. Not to speak about absolutely demonic chief dancer Adam.Cooper. Bourne’s «Play without words» was as genious as Joseph Lowsy’s film «Wallet» with Dirk Bogart in leading role. The performance, without destroying the original piece, gave a very authentic and talented look on the situation when one character – Master – regenerated in a pettiness, and the other - Wallet – became his master. Main characters were «trippled». Bourne proposed a puzzle to the audience . Multiplying characters he intrigued a lot and the audience followed their metamorphoses as if all that was a detective story. «For me the main theme of «Wallet» was seduction, temptation. You may be tempted by so many things like power or desire to belong to high society. But that’s not all. I discovered in «Wallet» a very theatrical idea which led me to the decision to introduce three actors for each role. Why not to Male chorus line – swans with denuded torso and in feather covered drawers – was a real shock for admirers of classic art 62 ITI-INFO N2 2010 «For me the main theme of «Wallet» was seduction, temptation. And who out of three actors is a real main character? This play could happen in our imagination. It was so tremendous and terrible! We had no idea how it was possible to do it without words. But it was such a challenge! The answer came to me from Harold Pinter’s ingenious plays. His plays never give simple answers. They are always disputable.» With time he was changing, getting more courageous. So, he provoked the audience more and more actively. Matthew himself recognized that some five years ago he could hardly make a performance like «Dorian «Swan Lake» Gray». In «Romeo & Romeo» Studio Matthew Bourne and his company worked on male duets, checking every time their emotional impact on the audience. They took quite a lot from there to «Dorian Gray». Even the playbill was saying «choreography by Matthew Bourne and actors of the company». Theater director likes to work with na ve consciousness of the audience. In this regard he is a kind of educator. On the other hand, he is manipulator. It is easier to amaze and win virgin consciousness. «I will not force you to think different if you love just pure dance. But the majority of the audience, some eighty or ninety percent, prefer to go to cinema, not to theater. I must be sure I should be able to win them and they would pay attention to my productions. We have our own secret code. When you come to theater you don’t need to know anything in advance. You don’t need playbill, synopsis. You should not have your own idea of characters. All you need is just to watch and perceive. Nothing more. And that’s my business what will be you impression after the show is over.». The action in Oscar Wilde’s novel « The Picture of Dorian Gray» written in 1891 was transferred by Bourne to the contemporary world of fashion, photography and glamour. The director makes an accent on the cult of youth, or even obsession for youth, influence of celebrities on our inner ego. He fearlessly changes gender of some characters. Actress Cybil Vane turns into vainglorious Covent-Garden soloist Cyril Vane, Lord Henry becomes Lady H, a character similar to Meryl Streep’s female character in film «Devil wears Prada», masterful and powerful figure in the world of glamour. With the help of a photographer they transform Dorian (Richard Winsor) in supermodel., his face is flaunting now on billboards and covers pages of glossy magazine. He becomes an icon of style advertizing perfume «Immortal». The theme of doubles which is often present in Bourne’s work is rather ambiguous in Dorian Grays’s story: Doppelhunger here is both generated by imagination of the character and a kind of a clone produced by computer and, at last, a real man, Dorian’s adversary and competitor, occupying his work position and even his place in bed with the woman he «Dorian Gray» I WILL NOT FORCE YOU TO THINK DIFFERENT IF YOU LOVE JUST PURE DANCE. BUT THE MAJORITY OF THE AUDIENCE, SOME EIGHTY OR NINETY PERCENT, PREFER TO GO TO CINEMA, NOT TO THEATER. I MUST BE SURE I SHOULD BE ABLE TO WIN THEM AND THEY WOULD PAY ATTENTION TO MY PRODUCTIONS depends on. The director has a sharp judgement about the vanity fair displayed on stage: «All of them are afraid that somebody new , younger, handsome, cruel would come and occupy your place. This fear pursues each celebrity. Oscar Wilde had a brilliant intellect: hatred for himself was raising inside Dorian. Let’s imagine that, in reality, his picture was not changing and all those awful metamorphoses were just a result of his imagination. It was an imagination of a man who was badgered by sense of guilt. My favorite moment in the performance is when Dorian Gray confronts the Doppelhunger face to face. At this moment he sees the face of Death. Let’s remind the second part of Wilde’s novel. Death was pursuing Dorian Gray closely, lagging behind just on a step. Glamour life exhausted Dorian in the performance. He is afraid of looking grown older and not that attractive as before. His face advertizing perfume with such a relevant name «Immortal» multiplied in magazines and on billboards obliges to correspond. He is scared of not being any longer object of desire for N2 2010 ITI-INFO 63 Glamour life exhausted Dorian in the performance. He is afraid of looking grown older and not that attractive as before. «I TAKE A VERY SIMPLE PLOT AND THEN COMPOSE A NEW STORY AROUND IT USING ALL POSSIBLE INGENUITY. I AM TAKEN BY IT ALTHOUGH I FEEL SOME DIFFICULTY. I KNOW, MOST PEOPLE IN THE AUDIENCE FEEL A BIT UNCOMFORTABLE WHEN THEY WATCH A PRODUCTION WITHOUT WORDS» so many people. He is afraid that Basil’s new pictures could show another, disgusting face which would give out how much he has changed. Dorian’s pics are a part of setting. Diamond skull is another element of set as a reference to one of most expensive pieces of modern art made by Damien Hurst. Witty use of this symbol of death works brilliantly in the show. The director even identifies the skull with picture of the character as Dorian Gray’s picture is not present in the performance. Mathew Bourne is not interested in making libretto from zero. He prefers to give his interpretation of a widely known plot. In «Nutcracker» the story starts in an orphanage where cynical trustees and bosses try even to deprive wretched children a Christmas party. The puppet of Nut-Cracker looks like a live monster Frankenstein. Waltz of snow flakes is a cold kingdom of the Queen of Snow where everybody is skating. And the Land of Sweets is inhabited by cruel and vainglorious characters. Klara fights for the man she loves but a beauty from beau monde wins the orphan in unequal struggle. Still Mattew Bourne would not be himself if Klara in the final scene had not discovered in her orphan’s bed a handsome prince and had not escaped with him through window using a rope ladder. The most fascinating for the director is to transfer the action to the present day. In Prokofiev’s «Cinderella» it’s London in the times of World War Two. In fact, a dancing bar 64 ITI-INFO N2 2010 «Dorian Gray» was destroyed in a bombardment. Cinderella’s ball occurs on ruins of the bar. «I take a very simple plot and then compose a new story around it using all possible ingenuity. I am taken by it although I feel some difficulty. I know, most people in the audience feel a bit uncomfortable when they watch a production without words» – says Matthew Boutne. Working with dynamic and passionate music of «Carmen-Suite» the director composes an absolutely new plot about an ambivalent character. Luca (Alan Vincent) appears in a garage and seduces both the owner’s wife Lana (Saranne Curtin) and a young hired help Angelo (Will Camp). A brutal character, cruel acts, oiled vests, sweat, dirt and blood. Wild murder of the owner. An innocent gets to prison, sexual violence, old cars races – all what was incompatible with the world of dance in the beginning of the 21st century found its embodiment in Bourne’ s production. In «Car Man» he kept away from ballet after careful consideration and he approached esthetics of the contemporary dance theater developing his most original ideas which he first used in «Play without Words». This choreography rigid, powerful, at times rough and rather sexual made the performance similar to cinema in stylistics. Here is echo from two films «Midnight Express» and «Postman always rings twice». The avenger who run away from prison returns to the garage to punish the lover. But Lana does the fatal shot and kills more likely with jealousy. Bourne does «Car Man» as if he denies himself. It is difficult to create something original. All was thought up and invented before you. No way to create something really valid without support of something or just denying something. To my opinion, original ideas do not exist at all. Allow me to disagree with you in that regard». A lot of things came into play here – fascination with innovative choreography, the power of youth, the passion. Vasiliev was on fire, and he fell in love with his roles, with each choreographer’s artistic uniqueness. Fate was generous to him even during the years of entrenched stagnation. Goleizovsky staged «Narcissus» especially for him, and none of the next-generation stars were able to surpass the ballet’s first performer. The wild grace of a man-beast, the complete integration into the wilderness, the sensation of smells, sounds, light, wind – all of it found its reflection in the dance. Vasiliev’s Narcissus became one with nature. During his jumps he seemed to rise above his own head, his body blending in with the earth and the air. He was overflowing with the happiness of youth and the joy of everyday discoveries. And when he was dying, his Narcissus seemed to disappear amidst the rippling circles on the water’s surface. That vibrating, melting movement of his knees with which he lowered himself onto the surface of the water, as he passed into oblivion, remains to this day beyond the capabilities of other dancers. Vasiliev was the only one who managed to conquer it. He was able to look into despair-filled eyes of Fokine’s Petrushka, having intuitively copied the famous movements of Vaslav Nijinsky in that role (later he would take part in Beppe Menegatti’s dramatic production of «Nijinsky»). His meeting with the great Maurice Bejart was one of the most important encounters of his artistic career, and it gave the artist a Vasiliev was on fire, and he fell in love with his roles, with each choreographer’s artistic uniqueness 72 ITI-INFO N2 2010 completely new conception of Petrushka – that of a modern hero, almost straight out of an existential drama. Later Vasiliev and Maksimova performed a love duet from Bejar’s «Romeo and Juliette». The audience still remembers the beauty of lines of their white-clad bodies, the acrobatic elegance of their poses, the surreal imagery of this sincere duet. Vasiliev always aspired to try his hand at choreography. He dedicated the ballet «I Want to Dance» to Galina Ulanova’s anniversary. Then followed «Fragments of a Biography», ballet films «Anyuta» and «Road House», choreographic scenes in the film «Fouette», ballets «Romeo and Juliet», «Cinderella,» «Balda» («Blockhead»), Rachmaninoff’s «Elegy». In the production of «Romeo and Juliet» in collaboration with the distinguished conductor Evgeny Kolobov, Vasiliev approached the stage area from an innovator’s point of view – the action of Shakespeare’s tragedy unfolded on two stages, while the conductor and the orchestra, who found themselves between the upper and the lower levels, became participants in the show. «Anyuta», featuring Ekaterina Maximova, was one of the ballerina’s most brilliant works that prolonged her career on stage. In 2008, at an anniversary celebration of the famous duet, it was her student Svetlana Lunkina that danced in that role, and Vasiliev himself came on stage as Pyotr Leontievich. The tragic, unexpected death of Ekaterina Maximova in 2009 was the most devastating event in Vladimir Vasiliev’s life. In one single moment that love-based radiant union of two infinitely talented people, nicknamed «Katya and Volodya», ceased to exist. Everything seemed insignificant in comparison with this sorrow: his conflict with Yuri Grigorovich and his dismissal from the Bolshoi Theater, his return to the Bolshoi in director’s capacity, his production of «Swan Lake» that was not received well by everyone, cancellation of his contract with the Theater on the initiative of the Ministry of Culture. A wise friend of mine, poet and artist Tonino Guerra, who recently celebrated his 90 th birthday, always says: «One should aspire to create a little more than cliched perfection.» There are extremely few of those who were able to do that. And among those few extraordinary people who managed to break through to the stars is Vladimir Vasiliev. N2 2010 ITI-INFO 75 Russian Stories INVENTING HEAVEN AND HELL WHAT SHE DID IS NOW DESCRIBED AS “MODERN DANCE”. IN REALITY IT WAS NOT QUITE MODERN. DANCE EXISTS AS LONG AS HUMANKIND. HOWEVER BEFORE THE EMERGENCE OF THE CLASSICAL BALLET DANCE WAS NOT FULLY CONSIDERED AN ART FORM. ISADORA DID NOT REALLY INVENT ANYTHING. S he just returned dance to its origins, into the realm of life. The secret of her dance is a simple one: getting rid of all conventions and becoming oneself. This especially provides to be very difficult. But it is possible to express everything with dance: love, hate, the rush of the wind, revolution, death, separation and even such an odd biography that Isadora Duncan choose for herself. By looking at Isadora even the most creative visionary could not imagine her as a dancer. She was a relatively heavy woman, not at all built for the ballet. She couldn’t stand on her toes in ballet shoes. She had nothing in common with Pavlova and Kshesinskaya. But her movement seemed as if it was copied from the dancers depicted on ancient Greek bas-reliefs. This resemblance was not random. Isadora precisely studied Greek and Italian dance. Her obsession with Greece reached to the levels of the absurd. She even walked the streets wearing a tunic. Nowadays, nobody would even turn a head. But just imagine Europe at the end of nineteenth century. Stiff ladies and gentlemen in cylinders bowed at each other at fifty meters apart. Oscar Wilde received a prison sentence for sodomy. And there she was uncombed, barefooted, in the costume of Greek dancer. When she came in that attire to Greece and walked on the street in Athens she was nearly taken to the police station. That’s an important touch. Not only retaining to the biography of Isadora but to all the modernist arts movement. The aspiration to become more natural than life itself revealed impenitent aestheticism in the artists of the time. Famous poet Vladimir Mayakovsky was an aesthete dreaming of poetry that spoke the toungue of the streets. So was another renown poet of the time Nikolai Kluyev who walked around Moscow dressed as a! drayman 76 ITI-INFO N2 2010 while reading the original German text of Heinrich Heine. So was Isadora when she danced to the “Funeral March” of Chopin. That is why she was invited to perform not only in theaters but at high society events. Immature audience did not comprehend this kind of art. However, the mature and experienced audience did not always understand it either. It was not so much the modernist concept of dance that brought Isadora fame, but the fact that she performed nude in public. For her it symbolized freedom from the conventional. Removing clothes meant return to the natural innate state of being… But not many recognized this symbol. The majority of the audience was convinced that it was striptease. It is interesting that the legendary spy Mata Hari was the most famous follower of Isadora. In fact she became a dancer inspired by the performances of Isadora. Of course she danced nude. In her spare time from spying she imitated Malaysian and Indian dances. But from today’s point of view, it was bluntly striptease. It is difficult to say that Isadora consciously strived to shock her audience. She was just swept away by emotions. At that time the physical and the spiritual were separated in the consciousness of the public. Art was art and sexuality was sexuality. But in the consciousness of Isadora they coexisted inseparably. An example of this was her interaction with Stanislavsky. Delighted by his plays she went backstage after the show and expressed a desire to dance nude for Konstantin Sergeevich. Stanislavsky reacted calmly: “Perhaps it is very interesting,” he said. “I will definitely watch.” And added: “ Together with my wife Maria.” This would be understood nowadays an! asymmetric answer. Two worlds clashed face to face without reaching a mutual understanding. Stanislavsky did not live on the edge of the abyss. The traditional culture standing behind him was balanced, reserved, and sober. As a result, a collision that could arise into a dramatic relationship with a whirl of developments ended as an anecdote. A real drama reached Isadora later after the Russian revolution. She took an invitation of the enlightenment! commissar Lunacharsky, opened a school of modern dance in Moscow, and started giving revolutionary performances. During one of them she met a Russian poet Sergei Esenin. Isadora danced “The International.” It is hard to imagine how the working class audience could react to this. Most likely they were puzzled. A half naked mature woman was jumping around the stage and waving a red scarf. What could this mean? But there was a man at that performance that reacted properly. Esenin understood that he must do something. Something very vivid and expressive. He heavily swore and then said: “Step away everybody!” He danced a wild, ridiculous, but very passionate dance right in front of Isadora at the end of it falling to his knees. Isadora stroke his hair and said: “Angel!” Then looked in his eyes and uttered: “Devil!” This was their love confession. Their interaction was a mystery. She almost didn’t speak Russian. He did not know any English at all. Without doubt she did not understand any of his poetry. But like Isadora Esenin did not separate life from poetry. Poetry was his life just like hers was dance. And then their life became a drama finally evolving into a tragedy even though there were not any explicit reasons for this. They were a successful, famous and talented couple. Peace and love were in the air. They even performed together. She danced and he read his poetry. When they married Esenin took a second surname and became Duncan-Esenin. Privately he nicknamed her with a peasant Russian name Dunka. She addressed him formally as Sergey Aleksandrovich. Things seemed perfect. But as Esenin wrote in his poem: “If heaven and hell did not exist, man would invent them.” Isadora brought him to Europe and America. Nobody knew Esenin there and he felt uncomfortable. He started drinking. He gave away Isadora’s clothes to the homeless and threw fits in restaurants. When the newspaper wrote that the Legendary Isadora arrived with her young husband Esenin became so enraged that he threw a boot at her. Isadora got quite distressed with his rowdy behavior and left alone for Paris. “Go to hell, old hag,” was Esenin’s reply. In a few weeks he sent her a telegram “I’m in love with another woman, happy, and married.” Of course he was not happy. It was a lie. His personal life wasn’t successful. He constantly drank, had conversations with the “Black Man” from his famous poem, and went completely crazy. Shortly after separation with Isadora he committed suicide. The life that Esenin led had to end tragically. This was obvious. Isadora lived for two more years after his death. She performed her last dance in Niece. Then she got in a car with the famous red scarf draped around her neck. It was the same scarf with which she danced in front of Esenin. “Goodbye my friends, I am off to glory!” said Isadora. As the car gained speed her scarf became entangled around one of the vehicle's open-spoked wheels and rear axle. Isadora claimed that she started dancing in her mother’s womb. This means that her whole life from beginning until the end consisted of pure dance. This lake has the largest surface in the world, the Baikal of America. When I moved to Russia, it was as if I once again found myself back in Minnesota. We also have taiga and mosquitoes – although ours are much smaller than the ones here. My father is a lumber mill owner, and my mother is an administrator at an outpatient clinic. She always wanted me to have a good grasp of art: she drove me to museums, took me to the local theater auditions, wanted me to take music lessons (I played the cello, the trumpet, the viola, and now I also play the violin). Russia to me was always shrouded in some kind of romantic aura, not least of all because of the Cold War. Once there was a Russian girl who came to us as part of a cultural exchange program, and she would talk excitedly about Lake Baikal – the deepest lake in the world. I immediately had the urge to visit it (which, by the way, I have already done twice – it is your best treasure!) The other thing that influenced my attitude toward Russia is the fact that Chekhov, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy also come from here. I began studying musical theater at the University of Michigan. In our third year of studies, as a matter of tradition, we were required to do an internship in a different country. As a rule, students try to end up in London or, as a last resort, in Australia, but I didn’t want to take the easy way out. I found an internet site that talked about a one of its kind joint program, provided by the Eugene O’Neill Institute in partnership with the M.H.A.T. School, and decided that I would be going to Moscow. During one of our lessons our teachers Igor Zolotovitsky and Sergei Zemtsov asked me via an interpreter whether I liked the Russian language, Moscow. I didn’t quite understand the point of their questions, but I responded politely, saying yes, I did. “Well, then come to us to study”. And at that moment – I don’t know quite how to explain it – the entire great big world around me became this narrow tunnel, the only right path. The lesson was still going on, but I no longer heard anything; I only knew that I could not give up such an opportunity. My parents, N2 2010 ITI-INFO 83 naturally, did not understand my decision – in Michigan I could receive grants and study for free. But… there we were not taught to be artists, but rather to view art as a business, and I knew even before my trip to Russia that, for me, something needed to be changed. Later I became truly frightened by my decision. I remember my first day in the dormitory – nobody around, the place was completely empty, and so I started playing the viola to somehow distract my mind from my fear. February to July I spent living in this manner: I studied the language, tried to work, to teach English. And somehow unwittingly became friends with students from Konstantin Raikin’s class. I went with them to Satyricon and that’s when I knew that I was interested in that type of theater. As MOSCOW IN GENERAL IS A VERY COMPLICATED CITY; WHEN YOU ARE A STRANGER TO THEM, THEY ARE VERY RESERVED. BUT ONCE THEY GET TO KNOW YOU, THEY BECOME INCREDIBLY WARM a result I told Zemtsov and Zolotovitsky that I wanted to study with those guys. The five of us, rookies, entered the second year right after a terrible tragedy: Fima Roschupkin, our student and the coolest of friends, was killed in a plane crash. We didn’t hang out with him all that often, but we could tell that he had a big heart. He was killed in July, and in September when the studies began, everybody was wary of us, as if we had come to replace someone who was irreplaceable. Everybody was uncomfortable, and me most of all – I have a hard time making friends, especially in a foreign country. But Konstantin Arkadyevich right away and very firmly immersed us in work. Later we went twice to visit Fima’s parents, and that brought us much closer together. Of course it was difficult to study – nobody translated anything just for my sake alone. On my very first day of studies in lecture hall 401 I said to myself: “Okay, Odin. You are here, and now you need to start understanding.” Evidently, I was going to have to plunge myself into this “water”. The need to express one’s thoughts forces one to learn rather quickly how to put words together – albeit incorrectly, but in a way that could be understood. I soon realized that when you yourself understand what you mean, you’ll find the right words. It’s straight out of Stanislavski: the mouth takes care of everything by itself. Currently I am performing Ostrovsky, and I realize that his language is already a bit foreign for the Russians, but to me that’s not a problem. I still have to pore over the text with a dictionary, just like I would for any other role. The same thing, by the way, happens to an American actor who’s performing Shakespeare in English: a new syntax, an unfamiliar vocabulary that Shakespeare brought into the English language. During my studies I went through periods of utter despair. I was already planning to buy a return ticket. One day I finally resolved to talk to Konstantin Arkadyevich, who has always Currently I am performing Ostrovsky, and I realize that his language is already a bit foreign for the Russians, but to me that’s not a problem. 84 ITI-INFO N2 2010 I am playing Hamlet here and now, albeit with an accent, I have to get them to listen to me. And I succeeded! been a great help to me. Even to the point of paying a sum of money for my studies, which I could not afford: “Don’t worry about it, Odin, forget it. You can think about it many years from now”. I still have not paid him back the money. And back then he told me: “First of all, calm down. Second, try to find at least one work that you can get lost in”. “Hamlet”, of course, became such a work, but it wasn’t the only one. Long before “Hamlet” we began working with passages. And I was given (most likely at Raikin’s suggestion) the role of Boris Grigoryevich from the play “The Storm”. I began to work. And suddenly during the play’s run I felt a good reaction from the audience, heard laughter. And that moment gave me the strength I needed to keep going and to survive long enough to play “Hamlet”. To go down in history, so to speak – after all, this part has never before been played by a foreigner. While playing “Hamlet” I too had to overcome certain obstacles, due to my accent. One time there was a guy and a girl who had obviously come in from the street without the right frame of mind: they were whispering to each other, got distracted by their cell phones. But I said to myself: if I am playing Hamlet here and now, albeit with an accent, albeit in front of people like that, I have to get them to listen to me. And I succeeded! When I was finishing my studies at the M.H.A.T. School, I had offers from different theaters, but Satyricon was the only one that offered me a part. And I realized that the most important thing is to work with those who want to work with you. Konstantin Arkadyevich is like a father to me. He supports me here like a father would, and like a father he is prepared to let me go, knowing that someday I may be offered some interesting project. And that knowledge warms my heart! Moscow in general is a very complicated city; if I hadn’t found people whom I became close to, I doubt that I would have been able to stay here. In Russia it’s the people that are most important. When you are a stranger to them, they are very reserved – you get the impression that they simply do not notice you, don’t consider you a human being. But once they get to know you, they become incredibly warm. If a Russian person is upset over something, you can tell right away! They don’t hide anything to begin with! To me that’s like a breath of fresh air after all sorts of artificial friendships that I’ve seen in abundance in America. That’s why Russians like clearly-expressed thoughts even in theater. The question of what to do next troubles me greatly. People whom I respect – teachers, directors – tell me that I must leave. If an actor is serious about his career, he must live in his native land. I understand all that, but I have absolutely no idea of what I should do with all of this – the interesting opportunities, the people who want to work with me. No idea”. * Note: Biron’s first name, Odin, in Russian sounds the same as the number “one” (1). Diaghilev, Balanchine, Speccivtzeva. MOSCOW. Publishing program «Interros», 2009, 432 pages with illustrations. S lanted cover opens up as a ballet curtain. Under are drawings, photos, diary entries, and correspondence. It is the archive of the famous artist Mikhail Larionov – a decorator, choreographer and librettist for the Diaghilev’s «Ballets Russes.» There is a lot written about Sergei Diaghilev and his enterprise, however nothing so thoroughal and authentic on the subject exists to the date. Of course as any memoirist Larionov is biased and subjective. He contradicts Diaghilev, critically rates a number of his performances, and considerably exaggerates his own participation in «Russian Seasons.» His remarks about famous ballet dancers today seem outrageous: «Dancers such as Pavlova and Nijinsky became charming due to their personal qualities while they remain imperfect.» How can Nijinsky and Pavlova, who are still worshiped by the world of ballet, be imperfect? But Larionov had his own perspective. He did not only see them with his own eyes but worked with them as well. When a man just as great as Nijinsky but in his own trade writes about Nijinsky, it seems credible. His book is not only about the art form of ballet but about the life of the ballet, which is just as interesting. Apparently he put charm above cold perfection. Costume sketches and scenes from performances are alternated with unique visual material such as photographs of dressing rooms, rehearsals and picnics. His writing is Serge Lifar-Pupil. «Ode». NOT ONE SINGLE PERFORMANCE WAS STAGED IN RUSSIА N2 2010 ITI-INFO 89 Vera Nemchinova. 1920 full of private details of quarrels, marriage relationships, even about who stayed in the same hotel together. However it does not have a feeling of yellow press, but just of scrupulousness with which Larionov particulary fixated everything as it appeared before him. He did it for History, recording everything from insignificant details to making precise and sometimes merciless psychological records. For example, this is how the characterizes Diaghilev, who he respected deeply: «He possessed a sense of figuring out a person’s abilities as well as an aplomb of thinking that he can make everything he wants from anyone he wants.» It was a rough remark, but a real producer must bear the same qualities. And Diaghilev was not just real, he was a genius. It is interesting that most of the surnames in the text were written with Latin letters. And it’s even more striking that the book itself was written in Russian. Larionov lived most of his live abroad and died in France. Could he count on attention 90 ITI-INFO N2 2010 of Russian readers? Especially considering that then in the middle of the century the reader was Soviet, not Russian? He couldn’t count on it but he probably just hoped. Diaghilev’s ballet was primarily an export product. It was not for Russia but from Russia. Not one single performance was staged in Russia. All of the ballets such as the «Midnight Sun,» «Le Bouffon,» «Scheherazade» first settled in the art history of the world and only then in the history of Russian art. Justice triumphed about a century after the events described in the book, by the courtesy of Larionov’s widow who presented this immense archive to Tretyakov gallery. For many months, specialists from Russia, USA, and France decrypted manuscripts and photographed images and drawings. This is a truly fantastic story of how a book that Larionov only aspired to write appeared. HIS FIRST PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHS DEPICT CARS AND PHILHARMONIC MUSICIANS. IN LATE 1970S HE ALREADY EARNED INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM, CONTRIBUTING TO SUCH MAGAZINES AS «STERN», «SPIEGEL», «ZEITMAGAZIN», «TIME» AND OTHERS. B ut a true triumph was awaiting him after the release of the photographic album «Africa» (1976), after which the publishers offered Blum to show the world the reclusive «Soviet Archipelago». Thus appeared his next album «Russia, the Land and People of the Soviet Union» (1980), whose very title speaks to the photographer’s openness and lack of political engagement. One of his principal discoveries was Maya Plisetskaya dancing with Alexander Godunov. From then on, dance became one of Dieter Blum’s major themes, earning him the name of a photographer that «dances with camera». Among his range of interests are the classics (Petitpas, Ivanov), and the contemporary dance (Wilson, Bejart, Ulrich, Alonso), and the search of new images for ballet’s biggest world stars (Baryshnikov, Malakhov, Ivo, Cragun, Guerra, Dow, Pascal). The famous Stuttgart Ballet Company became one of his particular passions, giving birth to a series of photographs titled «Cathedrals of the body» – an ode to beauty, freedom and the 94 ITI-INFO N2 2010 human body’s infinite potential. Nevertheless, he is not at all trying to capture the moment – none of that «linger you now, you are so fair», but rather constructs it rigidly with a purely German expression, engineering calculations in conditions of zero gravity and a truly Hellenic admiration of beauty. On the cover of our issue is Elisa Carrillo Cabrera, captured by Blum’s camera. She is a favorite of Berlin, where she currently works, and of Stuttgart, where she started her German career, as well as of her native Mexico, which follows the successes of its fellow countrywoman without jealousy, but rather with admiration and gratitude for her visits (and has recently named her Mexico’s official Cultural Ambassador). Graduate of the National School of Classical Ballet (Escuela Nacional de Danza Cl sica (INBA), Mexico), Elisa was awarded bronze and gold medals at the National Classical Dance Competition for children and young people and continued her studies at the English National Ballet School at Covent Garden. There she was noticed by Reid Anderson, the artistic director of the famous Stuttgart Ballet, which owes its high standing to the great choreographer John Cranko and his students who determine the «weather» of today’s international ballet: John Neumeier, Jiri Kylian, William Forsythe, Hans Van Manen, Uwe Scholz and others. The European style of training combined with the ballerina’s natural expression, arising from her Native American roots, the blood of Maya and Aztec Indians that runs in her veins, have made an impression on the artistic director, and the ranks of Stuttgart Ballet’s international company were enriched with this unique artist. It was here as well that Elisa met her other half – a dancer from Russia named Mikhail Kaniskin. Mikhail began dancing from early childhood, and already at the age of five he came out onto the stage of the Tchaikovsky Elisa Carrillo Cabrera and Mikhail Kaniskin. Photo by Jeorge Coria Concert Hall as part of the Georgian dance ensemble «Kolkhida». Later he entered the Moscow State Academy of Choreography at the Bolshoi Theater, and at the age of sixteen, while performing at the international youth competition «Prix de Lausanne», he was invited to continue his studies at ballet schools of Roland Petit (Marseilles) and John Cranko (Stuttgart). Mikhail chose Stuttgart and arrived there at the same time as the famous instructor of the Moscow State Academy of Choreography Pyotr Pestov, responsible for training over one hundred and fifty soloists and premier dancers who are performing all over the world. Among those are Vladimir Malakhov, Alexei Ratmansky, Yuri Burlak, Nikolai Tsiskaridze, Yuri Smekalov and others. Mikhail found himself among «Pestov’s princes» (the name used in the world of ballet in reference to this maestro’s students because of their perfect schooling) and, while still doing his studies at the ballet school, began performing on the stage of Stuttgart’s Staatsopera, quickly climbing the ladder of ballet hierarchy from a corps de ballet artist to a premier dancer. Three years ago the Stuttgart audience gave a grand send-off for this couple, as they headed off to Berlin, where they were invited by the current general manager of the Berlin State Opera, Vladimir Malakhov. The refined prince Siegfried («Swan Lake») or the exquisite Apollo («Apollo Musaget»), the sensual Giselle or the unbowed swarthy Snow White (the new ballet sensation of Angelin Preljocajs), as well as their other roles choreographed by Mikhail Fokine, William Forsythe, Jiri Kylian, Jerome Robbins, John Neumeier, Hans Van Manen, George Balanchine, Glen Tetley, Marcia Haydee, Maurice Bejart, Patrice Bart, Mauro Bigonzetti and other leading choreographers find many admirers in different parts of the world. A decade of living together has done its part – directors are increasingly seeing in them the ideal partners who introduce the genuine drama of human relations into the clear lines of dance.
