АННОТАЦИЯ
Курс
«The
Body
Politics
in
Contemporary
Culture»
представляет
собой
последовательное рассмотрение ключевых проблематик, связанных с политикой тела и
телесным
воплощением
в
современном
обществе.
Лекции
и
семинары
курса
сфокусированы на различных социальных теориях телесности, телесных практик,
эмпирических исследованиях и иллюстративных кейсах. Занятия построены вокруг 7 тем,
среди которых теоретические основания изучения телесности в социологии, место тела в
системе социальной политики, взаимосвязь политики тела и гендера.
Помимо этого,
отдельные лекции и семинары посвящены таким вопросам как болезнь, здоровье и
социальное конструирование инвалидности, политика внешнего вида и репрезентация тел
в массовой культуре, расовые и классовые аспекты политики тела, современные
биотехнологии и альтернативные культуры воплощения.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course is designed to provide brief but systematic exploration of key issues of the
body politics and embodiment in contemporary culture for postgraduate students in sociology.
Lectures and seminars of the course are organized around variety of social theories of the body,
the body practices and the body politics, empiric researches of different aspects of embodiment
and cases relevant to the topic. Preparation for each lecture and seminar requires reading of the
core and supplementary course literature. At the end of the course student will write an essay on
the topic related to the body politics theme.
AIMS OF THE COURSE
The course is aimed to provide students with knowledge on different aspects of the body
politics in contemporary society and main theories of sociology of the body regarding the
following matters:

What is social about our embodiment and what are key issues of sociology of the body;

How agents of socialization shape the way we use our body (move, see, hear etc) and act
upon it through different practices in everyday life;

How the body can be a site for political struggle, medical regulation and justification of
social inequalities;

In what way gender politics shapes scientific knowledge about sex and how gender can
be inscribed on the surface of the body;

How mass media images of the body reflect cultural values and influence the way we
treat our bodies;

Implications of recent innovative biotechnologies for cultural understanding of the human
nature and borders of the body.
After finishing the course students will
 know basic sociological approaches to analysis of the body and embodiment, be able to
compare and integrate different theoretical perspectives;
 develop critical approach to mechanisms of the body politics related to social policy,
medicine, culture industry, mass media and everyday practices;
 be able to reveal relations of power and domination, inequality and exclusion in mass
media representations of the body;
 acquire skills to analyze role of gender, sexuality, race, disability in everyday life and life
strategies of individuals;
 get sociologically funded understanding of the role of the body in social life and develop
reflexive approach to personal politics of the body;
 improve their English in general and enhance reading, speaking and writing skills.
COURSE PREREQUISITES
Participation in the course requires basic knowledge of History and Theory of Sociology,
Methodology of Sociology. Knowledge of English language (not less than intermediate level) is
crucial for taking part in the course.
ASSESSMENT
The final grade for the course consists of several components:
 Active participation in seminars, showing knowledge of literature and relevant
sociological approaches (20%);
 Power point presentation in class (15 minutes) based on literature and researches review
beyond required reading list (core texts). Presentations must cover issues and cases
related to the topics of the course (20%);
 3000 words analytical essay (60%).
After completion of the course students receive 4 ECTS.

знать теоретические подходы к анализу проблематики тела и телесности, уметь
различать, оспаривать и отстаивать различные точки зрения по данному вопросту,
сопоставлять и интегрировать исследовательские перспективы

понимать, уметь анализировать и объяснять механизмы действия «политики тела»
в контексте социальной политики, медицины, индустрии культуры и практик
повседневности.

понимать, уметь анализировать и представлять аудиториям роль гендера,
этничности/расы, инвалидности и сексуальной ориентации в повседневной жизни и
стратегических решениях людей.

уметь интерпретировать собственную «политику тела» и формировать
рационально-критическое отношение к проблематике телесности в конкретных
жизненных ситуациях, владеть навыками просвещения общественности по данным
вопросам.

уметь проводить анализ и выявлять отношения власти, доминирования,
неравенства и социального исключения в репрезентациях телесности в СМИ и
массовой культуре.

владеть навыками подготовки текстов в академическом и научно-популярном
жанрах на русском и английском языках.
