WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE MOVEMENT AND REFORM POLITICS
IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY:
BRITISH AND RUSSIAN CASES
Course syllabus
1. Women’s movement as a social movement: theoretical and methodological approaches.
Aim: to establish a theoretical framework for further discussions.
Content: Social movement’s definitions. Theories of social movements. Women’s movement as
a social movement. Gender as an analytical concept. Politics of gender and gender of politics.
Teaching methods: mini lecture highlighting main concepts of women’s studies, class reading,
small group work and group presentations.
Questions for group discussions:
1) Where women engaged in social movements in the same ways as men?
2) What is the difference between sex-role and gender approaches to social
phenomena?
3) Do gender relations change over time?
4) How does gender change our view of social movements?

2. Reform politics in Great Britain and Russia in the beginning of the 20 th century: origins
and content.
Aim: to set up a historical background for further work.
Content: National political and gender discourses. Parliamentary and social reforms in Great
Britain. The role of Irish question. British political parties. The First Russian Revolution (19051907) and the First Russian Duma. Russian political parties.
Teaching methods: group discussions and presentations (class participants divides into two
groups – “British” and “Russian”).
Group assignments: 1) Draw out a plot reflecting the causes and reform processes in both
countries. Follow the plan: a) reforms’ dates; b) reforms’ content; c) reasons for reforming; d)
reforms’ consequences.
2) Compare the character of British and Russian reforms and their results.

3. Women’s movements in Great Britain and Russia: stages and character.
Aim: to place women’s movements in national politics’ contexts.
Content: The first women’s organizations in Great Britain. National Union of Women’s Suffrage
Societies. Women’s militancy and Women’s Social and Political Union. Women’s charitable
groups in Russia. The battle for education and professional training. Political demands of
women. Liberalism and feminism. Socialism and feminism. The role of class differences among
women. Leaders of the movements.
Teaching methods:
Option 1. Group projects. Participants of (up to four) groups prepare presentations devoted to
various British and Russian women’s organizations trying to cover following issues: short
history, ideology and rhetoric, symbols and rituals, place in the national political structure. They
are required to develop these issues in some depth using additional sources.
Option 2. Role-play “International Women’s Congress”. All participants pretend to speak on
behalf of representatives of such organizations as National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies
(Great Britain), Women’s Social and Political Union (Great Britain), Soyuz Ravnopravnosti
Zhenshin (Russia) and Russian women workers’ organizations. On the base of assigned readings
four groups form “delegations” to “the Congress”. Scenario:
1. Congress’ chairwoman elections; formation of the secretariat.
2. Delegates report on their organizations.
3. Propounding a question for discussion (“What is the goal of the women’s movement - the
women’s liberation or democratic development of the society?”).
4. Carriage of a resolution.
